It's hard getting all my protein in when it's summertime and I just don't feel like eating, so this is one of my secret weapons. It's easier than you think, but you'll need some dry ice.
1. Mix a couple batches of protein shake. Add whatever tasty stuff you like - fruit, bits of Trioplex protein cookie, nuts, etc. Pour it into a big bowl. Don't fill the bowl up more than halfway. 2. It's optional to improve the texture, since this method of freezing results in short ice crystals and good creaminess anyway, but you can add glucose or a pinch of psyllium powder if you want to, or even some egg yolks heated in milk if you want to get really fancy and want the calories. 3. Wrap a plastic bag of dry ice in a towel and beat the crap out of it with a hammer until it's in powder and tiny chunks. You need about a pound of dry ice to make a big bowl of protein ice cream. 4. Put the bowl of protein shake in the sink and dump in the dry ice. Expect a horrible steaming and bubbling and possibly a mess if you overfilled the bowl. Did I mention you need a big bowl and you can't fill it more than halfway? 5. Stir constantly until the bubbling stops. A machine beater or standing mixer makes this a lot easier, but you will need to do it over the sink until you're sure you won't have a boil-over problem. Ice cream made by this method is surprisingly creamy and good because of the rapid freezing creating short chain ice crystals. You can actually make ice cream or sorbet out of wine or even hard liquor this way. What I have in the freezer now is chocolate mint Muscle Milk, Cookies and Cream flavor Isopure with fresh blueberries added, and Syntrax Fuzzy Navel sorbet. Very tasty stuff. |

Wow, that fuzzy navel sorbet sounds so refreshing. Question...If using 1lb of dry ice, how much whey and glucose do you suggest?

I also dumped in 1/4 cup of sugar free malitol syrup as a texture aid, but it's not strictly necessary. I'd suggest about the same with glucose if you want it, but the instant freezing method pretty much takes care of the creamy texture. Takes about 15 minutes to make a standing mixer bowl sized batch of protein ice cream, and if you get a couple pounds of dry ice, you can keep making more and fill your freezer. Protein shake slushees or shaved ice are a good bet in this weather too. You can use a fruit flavor and make it a concentrated syrup using a small amount of water, and drizzle that over shaved ice if you have access to any. Or just toss a scoop of protein powder in the blender with ice, fruit, fruit juice, etc. Syntrax and Isopure work very well for this. |

Hannah thank you for your help. Lots of different options I see. Been looking for different alternatives to spice up my pwo shake and I think this will help. I going to give that freezed dried ice a shot once I locate some. In the meantime, I going to go get a 2lb can of fuzzy navel and mix it in the blender with my dextrose/malto and see how that goes. I like the sugar free malitol idea too. Great idea for those sugar craving...no more chocolate sugarfree whey pudding for this guy anymore...hahaha. Thanks!

I like iced mocha protein drinks in the summer. Probably the quickest and dirtiest way to do it is to throw ice cubes in a blender plus a little water or milk and then your scoop of protein powder and the rest of the water or milk. I make a pot of flavored coffee the night before, and throw a cup of it in the blender with ice and a scoop of Mocha Joe Muscle Milk protein for a breakfast. |

Oh man, I just had a big old bowl of the protein ice cream I made with Isopure Cookies and Cream flavor with some skim milk and fresh blueberries. It was sinfully delicious. I shared a taste with a non dieting, non lifting friend who can have regular ice cream whenever he wants, and he thought it was great and would have eaten a lot more if I'd let him. I'm not letting him at my chocolate mint Muscle Milk ice cream or it will disappear.
Dry ice makes damn fine ice cream. It's a chemistry thing. Liquid nitrogen does it even better, but dry ice is a lot easier to come by. |
