I'm looking for some opinions on the pro's and con's of using double overhand grip and one under and one over for deadlifts. I herniated the same disc in my lower back twice from doing heavy deadlifts years ago and ever since then I have been using a one hand over one under grip. After doing this for so long I can barely use a double overhand grip anymore.
My lower back used to be great but since the disc problems it has become probably my biggest weak point. So if anyone has an opinion about the different grips for deadlifts I'd like to hear it. And also any of you who have had lower back problems I'd love to hear what your routines look like now and how you deal with chronic back pain. Thanks ![]() |

I've always been a proponent of train in the gym like your gonna lift in the meet. I don't know if you compete or not but if you do, I would highly recommend using one over one under. There's no way you can hold on to a heavy deadlift with two over without training straps. IMO, training straps a are a no..no.. for a powerlifter in the deadlift. They're great for other lifts but not one of the big three.
As for your back, I would recommend deadlifting every other week - it's helped me alot; quite a bit actually. I'm getting ready to crack 700 for the first time. hope this helps |

Have you tried reverse hypers? love em and taking a towel and rolling it up long ways (so its thicker) and putting and ice bag on it then laying on it for 20 min helps me.
but dont put directly on skin will cause frostbite. |

I have done a similar method using a 2 liter soda bottle with ice in it. It helps to some extent. I'm just getting really frustrated because I haven't competed since 2001 and I am hoping to compete again this fall or next spring but I really need to bring my lower back up to where it should be. The problem is that every time I get up to around 400 lbs with deadlifts I start getting major problems.

Use the grip that allows you to use more weight. It will probably be the alternating grip. If you are focusing on your back, by all means use straps.
Since you have an injury, work around it. Branch Warren said that bodybuilding is working around injuries. If deadlifts hurt too much, you can still build an awesome lower back with other safer exercises. Hope this helps! |
