I've been to swank, top notch gyms with the the new state of the art machines with specialize free weights and I've been to straight up basement gym (dungeons), you know the gym with that one light bulb that swings back and fourth to light up the whole place.
The point I'm trying to make is that I here a lot of guys complain about certain facilities and what they are missing but in all retrospect I believe it's not what the gym has to offer but what you bring with you to that gym ... determination. I'm sure everyone here has seen PUMPING IRON and every time I go to a gym that I feel is beneath me I think about Arnold's old gym conditions and I say fuck it and do the best that I can. That's just my 2 cents. |

I have trained at nice modern gyms and I have trained at some small dungeon gyms but my training stays the same. I go there to workout thats all. I might have to adapt and improvise a little but as long as I get my workout I am happy.

being a a-type Alpha male, that likes confrontation, I train mostly at home, no interrupting my sets/exercises. my family is trained to leave Daddy alone when he is in the weight pyle!!! I go to a swanky worlds in a richer city, adn it is full of bunnies, gweys, and greys( have seen many posts about all of this) and it drives me crazy to see someone sitting on the bench that you want talking on the cell phone or someone l;eaning in the smith machine talking up some bunny, WTF, I can only muster two days a week and go wehn there is limited poeple. I bring much dedication and desire with me, thus interruptions are deeply disturbing, and on occasion I have had to "school" poeple as to why the gym is there..

I travel a lot so have used many many different gyms (New Life, Lifetime, Golds, World, Powerhouse and a lot of unheard of places) I tend to agree that it doesn't really matter ....as long as they have the weights.
I would say though I am more comfortable at my home gym and move through my workout at a what I would say is a smoother or faster pace. I'm currently in Canada for the next 6-8 months so I am using Goodlife fitness centers right now and their decent places.

Since I work at a Planet Fitness get asked all the time, How do you work out there? They can't have enough weight in db for you. I always tell people, "you improvise, you adapt, you overcome"- clint eastwood, heartbreak ridge, i believe. I also tell them that I always do Babell work first for my heavier moves and then hit db when I'm already a little fatigued. As stated by many it's what you bring to the gym, not what the gym has............But I do miss alot of the hammer strength equipment.......my hack squat, a real squat rack, ..............

I havent worked out in a gym for a very long time..and while an olympic bar and powerblocks dont offer the stateliness of a fully equipped facility, I have the necessary creativeness. Ill give an example. For calves, ill step on a lower part of my upright section of the bench and on one foot do calf raises with my heaviest setting db. Sometimes strapped. Sometimes not, if i want to work on forearm strength. Holding my balance with the other hand on the upright. Works a charm bc i know how to activate the fibers. For seated raises, wait till you hear this shit. Sit on a reinforced chair low down enough to the ground, a few plates under my feet(alternate one and both to rep out and warm up), place a telephone book on my lap and then hike the barbell off the lowest setting on the bench (better be strong) Once i have it on my lap, slip the phone book out to my knee, move the barbell on top, and start the movement. It sounds tough and awkward, but i have the whole movement down to a matter of seconds.
