Get some antibiotics just in case.

Its only been two days so I doubt it is an infection BUT you never know. Every body's body reacts differently. I know people who have had a warm hard red knot for a week and it was nothing. Try icing it often...it should help.

I would try a warm compress or take a warm bath and soak it.

Is it red and warm to the touch? Very tender? It probably isn't an abscess.... try the heating pad/hot bath like suggested. Injection soreness is common, I wouldn't worry just yet.

Heat is an excellent idea as stated above. You may also want to try and have somebody rub it out. I've had a couple bad injections in my quads that have formed really hard knots that were quite painful. When it's happened, I lie on a bench, and have somebody use there elbow to try and break it up. If it's a bad one, it will hurt like a SOB, but this will help ensure it doesn't become abcessed. This was also suggested to me by a doc. Good luck, and you can never be too careful with injections.

I've been having redness, pain, swelling, and heat with all my injections so far.
Worried me at first, but it subsided after a few days. first pin was terrible. they've gotten better, first was the worst. but it goes away faster and faster , and I havent had a fever or abscess. though I check my temp and bp a lot now. |

after only a couple of days you should not be worried. If it has not started to get better after a week or so then you might start to worry. Don't go getting antibiotics, there are a lot of different antibiotics for dif. infections, bacteria, etc. this might cause your bodies defense system to actually be suseptable to other infections. Do not inject near that area until the knot and soreness is gone for awhile. This sounds like a bad injection that will go away after awhile, if you don't get deep into the muscle or are not used to the pain of the oil being deposited into your muscle then this will be uncomfortable for a bit, qwith time and injections you will get used to the pain, but read up on best injection practices and use a new pin to load and another new pin to inject EACH and every time. or you will be facing an abcess which you will not forget nor make the choice of being cheap and re-using a pin twice again..

Guys, he wants to ice it, not heat. Only ice will get the swelling and inflammation down. Heat is great immediately following an injection. |

Ice would be corect for a torn or damaged ligament, and or muscle, in which you would want to keep the swelling down to allow blood flow into the tissue. what he is dealing with is a deposit of oil that is not spreading out or dissapating, a hot compress or massage as My brother F-250 suggested will spread or dissapate the oil deposit into a larger area, thus reducing the knot. There might be minor swelling from the actual injection site, unless he had the shakes really bad and moved the pin all to hell and back, this would be only minor tearing of the tissue, and minopr swelling, which puts us back to the oil deposit... especially in the glutes, unless your in really good shape, you should use atleast a 1 1/2" pin to make sure to get deep into the glute muscle, or you just put a lump of oil into the lump of fat called your ass.., still will subside after a couple of days..
