The immigration bill that has been in the Senate for the last couple of weeks has been at main topic on the news and talk radio as of late. I'm curious to see where everyone stands on this issue. Keep in mind, we are talking about the ILLEGAL immigration problem, not legal immigration.
My view is quite simple actually. Complete the border fence that has funds already appropriated for its completion. Hire multiple contractors to work on 1-2 mile increments of the fence to speed up the completion of the fence. Make the fence a two-sided structure. Or in other words, two fences back to back. Shut off all social benefits to illegals. No education, no healthcare (unless an absolutely life threatening matter arises. In which case, the minimal amount of healthcare needed to keep the illegal alive is administered, and they are immediately deported to their home country where they can become a drain on their own country's economy. No welfare services of any kind. If we strip away the benefits they have of coming here, they will eventually return to their homeland. Make ENGLISH the OFFICIAL language of the United States for the love of God!!! If hordes of Americans illegally migrated to Mexico or any number of South American countries, do you honestly think they would accomodate us? Do you think they would provide English-only classes in the education system? Do you think they would allow signage for almost everything imaginable to be posted in English right next to the good 'ol Spanish signs? I'm going to have to go with a big hell no on that one! Ratify the 17th ammendment! That would do away with anchor babies. As for the rest of the estimated 12-20 million illegals that currently reside within our borders, when they are found, they should be detained. When they have enough to fill up a large cargo plane, i.e. military transport aircraft like a C-130, load that plane up and deport them! Keep doing this as long as they are able to keep flying plane loads at a time back. You may say this would be too costly. I say bullcrap! What is too costly is to let our national language, culture, and borders continue to erode away. The drain that illegals place on our welfare, education, and healthcare systems are a far greater monetary loss to our nation than deporting illegals. If you come to America as an immigrant, preferably a legal one, assimilate to OUR culture. If you still want your South American culture or your Hispanic culture, then stay in your own country. When you come to America, you become just that, an American. Not a hyphenated American. Hispanic-American, African-American, Italian-American. Drop the self-identity crisis bull and identify with the country you are living in. I am 1/2 Native American. I have direct bloodline ties with past chiefs of the Western Cherokee nation. Does that make me special? I think not. Does that entitle me to distinction? Hardly. The only distinction I'm entitled to is to be called an American. When I introduce myself to people, I don't say, "Hi, I'm F250 and I'm a Native American." If anyone should have reason to bitch and complain about loss of identity, it would be me, but I don't. I love this country, and I take an immense amount of pride when I hear our national anthem or see troops returning home from Iraq. I'm honored to live in this country, and I long not to be identified by an ethinc or racial title, but to only be an American. And I will not stand by silently and watch MY nation be taken over by people who do not even come into this country through the legal channels that have been established. And lastly, enforce the current laws we have on the books pertaining to illegal immigration NOW. F250

probably goin to jus be me and you again, we appear to be the only opinioniated ones here.. LOL as someone living two hours from the border in an area that has english as a second language, and lawsuits because of not providing enough support to the spanish speaking "citizens". I agree with you, building the damn fence as it should be, designed to keep them out, how do you think the fence would look if it were mexicans that bombed the tower??? well folks guess where most of terrorists eneter our country, through mexico, I am a little hardline on this, as I have poeple come up to me and look at me wierd cause I am not fluent in spanish as if it is my problem .. I don't think because you give birth here that you are allowed to stay is right either, thats only nine months away from citizen for every one crossing the border>>> I say if they are caught here illegally, drop them on the other side of the border, let them figure out how to get home, screw delivering them to their capitol, let them hike back the way they came, let the "coyotes" make more money returning them home...and caught here twice is enough to deport them to some far away island, then they would really be screwed, send to Taiwann, let them figure out how to get back from there...or we could jsut start shotting at them like they do our border guards, we lost one last month, he had two young children, and a wife, he was drowned in a canal, they are not allowed to use deadly force, and usually are rescuing these peoplel from the desert and severe dehydration, they enever know if they are facing scared poeple, or drug, terrorist smugglers....how is that for fair???, protect what is good about our country, our tax dollars are supporting greater than 80% of these people in my state..

I don't claim to know all about what exactly is going on with this bill, But I too live within a few hours of the border. I see illegals all the time, they are constantly coming through my farm, looking for food, water, work, and some where for shelter. Its awful to see what these people will do just to cross the desert. We recently had a few coyotes (people that haul illegals for fee's or to sweat shops0 get busted crossing through my farm!! Guns shooting and all!! They have even closed downthe interstate because of chases going on exchanging gun fire and so on!!!! Crazy!!!!
I think this is a major problem also. They sometimes take these poor peoples money and drop them in the middle of the hot desert to die, women, small children and all. Its sad. Is a fence that goes from one end of the border to the other the answer? I don't know. As long as America has been america we have had immigrants flocking to the free world, from everywhere. The fact that terriorists cross the deserts where I live into our country, yes this scares the crap out of me!!!! Whats the answer, ...well I don't have one. But I think we can start by not employing them when they cross without proper forms. Which there is a major black market providing them with illegal papers to be here!! I see it all the time owning agricultural based businesses. I know many farmer friends that employ them. But as long as they have the right papers, (which are not the legal ones), people don't get in trouble for having them employed. Its a major problem here in the US, but I don't know if a fence is the answer. But I am not that up on all the politics here in our country, don't claim to be and probably will never be, which is sad because I should.

If you don't mind, would you mind elaborating on your experience being a legal immigrant? I'm very interested to know what all you had to go through to gain legal immigrant status. F250

Allright, it's been a while, I came here before 9/11. I did the fingerprinting and the criminal backgroundcheck. I did the medical screening. I paid thousands of $ for a lawyer to help file all the paperwork + several hundreds more just for the INS to look at the paperwork. I had to go thru several interviews where they asked me about pretty much anything. It's a long and tedious process, but when all is said and done, the government knows that I am a healthy guy willing to work and pay my taxes and has no plans to leech of the system. They also required me to get sponsors, in case I couldn't support myself or went to the hospital and couldn't pay because the government would not help me at all(which is the way it should be).
There's probably tons of stuff that I forgot over the years, but I do remember thinking that it's odd they make me do all of this and then they just don't care about Pedro thats sauntering across the border. To me the biggest insult of all is to NOT learn the language or adapt to the culture of the country you are moving to! Had that happpen to my country with muslims, and believe me they are worse than anything that crawls up from mexico! |

My farm foreman, which has been with us for well over 20 years, went through the same process. Only he did the long and tedious task of becoming a US citizen. All of his children have been born here in the US and I believe his wife is also from here. He speaks pretty good english, sometimes while talking to him he will pause and you can just hear his brain working hard to translate and to respond to you correctly, there are still some things (very few) that he has trouble remembering in english and will ask you how to say, but he understands. He is one of the "Greatest" persons I know!!! He takes pride in his work and will do what ever it takes to get the job done no matter how long it takes. He doesn't tolerate laziness very well at all!!!! You come to work late or don't show, up as alot of the miagrant workers do, you will surely be fired. He takes a trip down to visit the rest of his family who still live in mexico about 12 hours from the border, I can't remember the name of the city, but he takes great pride in the fact that he is an american citizen especially when coming home from Mexico.
My parents have a few employee's that have there green card to be over here to work. I reall can't say that I don't know alot of business owners in my area that don't have at least one. Alot of the problem is, some of the jobs that they are willing to do and the low pay some of them are willing to take, people here that are citizens who have been born and raised here, will not do or take. They would rather live off the system and let the tax payers support them and there 8 children they will have just to collect more money and be able to get a larger house!!! I agree Nibbe that everyone should "HAVE" to adapt to the culture of the country they live in, but that is not the country "WE" live in. we live in a country of many cultures, We cater to those who don't speak the language of our land. In some cities the schools cater to the children of these people who have yet to learn english, and have been thrown into our school systems that inturn slow the learning process for english speaking students, but thats another story for another issue!!!! Anyway, if we are to sway illegals from coming to our country then "WE" need to stop catering to them and make them adjust to our ways. Stay Strong~~!!!! IPL
