my left leg - calf muscle where it attaches to the shin in front. For the past week, it feels like something is seperated (?) from the shin UNDER the muscle. I know. It's weird.
Anyway - it's painful only when I'm running. Other than that, it just twinges when I flex the muscle. It honestly feels like something is loose in there - lol. After cardio yesterday, it's even more noticeable. I bought an ACE wrap for it and will do cardio again today, but it feels weird and uncomfortable. There is no swelling or bruising. You can't tell anything is wrong by looking at it. What did I do to it? |

Does it feel like a shin splint? I used to work at a running store in college and most shin splint-like injuries are caused by either: 1. wearing improper running shoes, or 2. wearing running shoes that have broken down.
If you have either a fallen arch or a high rigid arch you should probably be running in a stability or motion control shoe depending on how bad your feet are. I can tell you this from a thousands of miles of running experience....rest it at this point. Things like this don't heal if you keep using it. All you're doing with the ACE wrap is making it temporarily bearable, but it's not going to solve the problem. Even if this is not a shin splint per se, it still needs some rest. I would not push it. I would take 2400mg Ibuprofen ED and ice it three times a day for about 20 minutes...and of course check your shoes. Last edited by longhorn71 : 04-27-2006 at 06:52 PM. |

it started when I upped my cardio to an hour a day about 2 weeks ago. I did the treadmill run/walk HIIT and ramped the incline up to 12 and back. It felt great, but I think I overdid it on the shins. I've also been running on dirt roads near my house. shit. I'm going to get on the eliptical today instead - if I feel any pressure at all, I'll stop. I promise...and I'll buy new running shoes this weekend. |

I bought new shoes. Nike max air trail runners. They are so comfortable. I've stayed away from running, and am feeling better. I'll hit the eliptical again for the next few days - and I have a kick boxing class. (I love kick boxing) I'll probably start up with the running again next week and see how it goes.

On a more serious note though, I agree, shoes do tend to cause massive problems when running. I had unusual shin splints and knee problems while playing football for the longest. It took my Sports Physician at Baylor Sports Medicine to tell me to try a medicated sole, formed to fit my foot.. Voila, pain subsided almost immediately.

I found out what's wrong with my leg.
The anterior tibialis is torn. Grade 2 strain. f**k. I woke up this morning and I had a bruise *******ing across my shin and anterior tibialis. Painful. When I touch it, there's numbness mixed with shooting pain. I went to the doctor. He wanted to put a cast on it. I said no - so he settle for a wrap that I'm required to wear all the damn time and am supposed to put my leg up whenever I'm sitting. No running, jumping, jogging, fast walking or anything else that strains the tibialis - or I'll tear it more and will need surgery. 3 months, minimum. thought you'd like to know. ![]() |
