Yohimbine
Systematic Name: 17α-hydroxy-yohimban-16α-carboxylic acid methyl ester Identifiers CAS Number: 146-48-5 ATC Code: G04BE04 Chemical Data Formula: C21 H26 N2 O3 Mol. Weight: 354.44 g/mol (base) // 390.90 g/mol (hydrochloride) Yohimbine is a selective competitive alpha2-adrenergic receptor antagonist and is used for treating erectile dysfunction. It is claimed to be an aphrodisiac. It is also used as a weight loss supplement as it increases noradrenaline (norepinephrine) levels. Common Uses: Used in tablet, capsule, and tincture form for increased serum testosterone levels, muscle growth and strength, weight loss, fatigue and sexual function. Research shows it is a vasodilator, which means that it increases blood flow to the extremities and appendages. It does this via an indirect mechanism of increasing the release of noradrenaline. Yohimbine also has been shown to decrease fat synthesis in the body by increasing fatty acid mobilization (causing weight loss). Common or Recommended Dosages: 10 to 20 mg/day divided into three dosages. One tablet (5.4mg) three-times/day for fatigue. Potential Side Effects: Yohimbine ingestion (4mg to 20 mg) has been associated with side effects including nervousness, insomnia, anxiety, urinary frequency, dizziness, tremors, headache, tachycardia, hypotension, hypertension, nausea and vomiting, brochospasm and lupus-like syndrome. Higher doses of oral Yohimbine create numerous side effects such as rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and overstimulation. Yohimbine is also used clinically to produce anxiety. Food-Drug/ Drug-Drug Interactions: Drugs such as phenothiazines enhance Yohimbine toxicity. Tyramine containing foods and nasal decongestants or diet products containing phenylpropaanolamine should be avoided to prevent a hypertensive crisis.
